Spaceport Gets $43K For Weather System

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – The New Mexico spaceport has received its first federal grant from an infrastructure program administered by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Spaceport America will get $43,000 from the FAA, with $4,300 in matching funds from Virgin Galactic, the site’s main tenant, to install an automated weather observation system. The New Mexico Spaceport Authority will pay the remaining $86,000.

Spaceport authority chief Rick Homans says the grant is small but the symbolism is great. Homans says it highlights the increasing attention the federal government is paying to the commercial space industry.
