Update: Man Killed, Hit By Train
El Paso County Sheriff’s officials said a man is dead after being run over by a train Saturday night.
It happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the crossing gates which intersect with OT Smith Road in Tornillo.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told ABC-7 the victim is Sabas Aranda Villalobos, 30.
Union Pacific train conductors reportedly told authorities they saw Villalobos and another man trying to cross the railroad tracks minutes before the crash.
Investigators said the conductors told them the train was travelling east at about 48 miles per hour when Villalobos was hit.
Sheriff’s officials said the train stopped several hundred feet from the point of impact.
They said they’re still investigating to see if Villalobos was accompanied by another man.
The crash happened at the same intersection where Stephanie Segura, 38, died last month.
Investigators said the Tornillo Junior High School principal was on her cell phone when she tried to get around the crossing gates on one track and never saw another train coming in the opposite direction on a parallel track.
District officials said Segura had left a work meeting moments before her death.
