Police ID Motorcyclist Killed In East El Paso

Anthony Olivas, 23, of 2118 Wedgewood, was driving his 2006 Yamaha motorcycle sounthbound on Wedgewood when a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 18-year-old Andrew Sandate, of 10000 block of Suez, was making a left turn from Wedgewood to travel west on Suez.

The motorcycle crashed into the right side of the Impala. Olivas was transported by El Paso Fire/Medical to Del Sol Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries. The department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit responded to conduct the investigation.

Police said they believe Olivas was speeding and failure to yield right of way by Sandate were factors in this crash.

Olivas was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

This is the 60th traffic related death this year as compared to 65 at this time in 2009. This is the 9th motorcycle fatality of 2010 as compared to 12 in 2009.
