ABC-7 First Alert Continues: Rain and Thunderstorm Chances Increase Thursday, With Flooding Threat Returning Sunday

EL PASO, Texas (ABC-7) — Quiet weather is expected across the Borderland today, but rain and thunderstorm chances will increase heading into Thursday, with the potential for flash flooding in some areas.

Isolated thunderstorms could develop this afternoon and early evening, mainly across Hudspeth County and southern Otero County. Most locations will remain relatively calm and quiet.

Storm Chances Increase Thursday

A surge of moisture will continue moving north into the region. This increase in moisture, combined with an approaching disturbance, will help fuel showers and thunderstorms beginning Thursday morning and continuing throughout the day.

Periods of rain are expected, with embedded thunderstorms possible. The strongest storms could produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding, especially in areas that receive repeated rounds of precipitation.

Rain and storm chances will continue into Friday before the Borderland gets a brief break on Saturday.

Another Round of Widespread Rain Sunday

The next significant weather system is expected to arrive Sunday as a deeper upper-level trough moves into the region. This system will provide stronger atmospheric lift, increasing the potential for widespread rain across the Borderland.

Moisture levels will once again climb well above normal for this time of year. Combined with stronger atmosphere dynamics, these conditions could increase the threat of heavy rainfall and flooding.

ABC-7 viewers should stay weather-aware heading into Sunday, particularly in flood-prone areas and locations that experience multiple rounds of rain.

Winds are expected to be slightly breezy Sunday before becoming breezier Monday as the system moves through the region.
