Fans Prepare For New Mexico Bowl Trip

Only about two days left until the UTEP Miners take on the BYU Cougars.

It’s bound to be an exciting weekend for Miner fans headed to the New Mexico Bowl.

University officials said there’s still time for people to head to Albuquerque to support the team.

As of Thursday, about 4,200 tickets of the 5,000 allotted have been sold.

And many people ABC-7 spoke with are finding different ways to get to the game.

Most said they will be driving there own vehicles rather than taking a bus. While others who can’t make the trip will be watching on TV.

“It’s an honor for us students that utep is actually in a bowl game. And it’s just exciting,” exclaimed Judith Rivera, a UTEP junior.

Twenty students will be going to the game for free. The Student Government Association (SGA) wanted to charter a bus for 49 people but couldn’t fill all those seats. So they decided to use two UTEP vans to take the 20 who had already registered.

Officials said that free round trip will be paid for by the SGA.

The UTEP Alumni Association will have a pregame breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday at the north end of the stadium. Officials said there are still plenty of tickets available for that event.

But whether it’s in person or on television, fans are amped about watching the game.

“They haven’t made it to a bowl in a couple of years. I’m glad that they’re back in a bowl,” said Jesus Martinez.

“I feel excited because I like a lot of football and it’s my school, the one that’s going, so it’s amazing,” said Favian Alvarez, a UTEP student.

UTEP athletics officials said tickets for the game will be available at the university’s ticket office until 5 p.m. Friday.

They said tickets will also be available in Albuquerque at the Alumni Association’s breakfast Saturday.
