Sugar Detox: Day 24

Day 24: Whoopie Pie’s inventor should be punished – pulled apart by horses or hit endlessly in the face by the pie’s deliciousness.

What? You don’t know what a Whoopie Pie is?

It doesn’t surprise me that many El Pasoans don’t know what this East Coast delicacy is.

Basically, it’s an Oreo Cakester, but sooooooo much better.

Imagine this: A smooth vanilla icing or cream filling sandwiched between two pieces of moist chocolate pound cake.

It’s heaven. Sweet sinful delicious heaven.

I didn’t think anyone in El Paso made them, so I haven’t had one in eight months.

Back to my day, I once again was faced with the difficult decision of where to eat for lunch. A new place called Corner Bakery just opened nearby. They have paninis and a healthy sandwich menu.

Walking into the Corner Bakery, it was like running into the line of sweets that lead to the evil woman’s gingerbread house in Hansel and Gretel. There were cookies and sugar covered pastries galore.

My eyes growing big, my discipline slowly withering with each new bag of sweets present along the way to the counter.

All set to order my healthy turkey sandwich, and ONLY a turkey sandwich, at the counter and the greatest of all delicacies caught my eye: the best looking Whoopie Pie I’ve seen this side of the Mississippi.

I managed to eat a healthy lunch, and *drum roll please* no Whoopie Pie.

But all through the meal, right in my line of sight just over my companions shoulder, was the dessert table. And on that table was that stupid-awesome pie.

I couldn’t even focus. I imagined myself biting into the moist cake with the cream spilling out over the sides and dribbling down my chin. Having to lick the extra icing off my fingers and…

Talk about whoopie.

Oops. While fantasizing about my sinful cheat with the pie I completely lost track of the conversation I was having. So much so that my companion called me out when he saw what I was looking at.

Even though my sugar cravings have been cut by 90 percent, I still encounter things on a daily basis that send my mind into a butter-creme frosting-filled gutter.

If you’ve been brave enough to embark on my adventure for yourself, you’re most likely very familiar with this. I don’t want to lie to you and say after 24 days that I no longer want to annihilate every sweet treat I see on the shelves, because I do.

I’m slowly coming to the realization that this addiction will be with me for the rest of my life. I think that with each passing day I will gain more self control and it will be easier for me to say no. But in the end, as long as things like Whoopie Pies exist, I will always be lusting after sugar-filled foods.
