George Atkins, City Council Candidate District 5
Name: George G. Atkins Office seeking: City Council District 5 Age: 70 Occupation: Retired Education: High School graduate of Tucumcari High School in 1959 (Tucumcari, NM) in the upper 10% of my class. Family: Married, three grown children and nine grandchildren
.Number-one campaign focus: Safety for the citizens of El Paso.
.What sets you apart from your opponents? I am not seeking, nor will I accept any endorsements or contributions/donations from any group, organization or association. The only endorsement I am seeking is from the voters. Contributions/donations will be accepted from individuals only with a $75.00 cap.
.Relevant experience that qualifies you for the position you seek: Business experience; Vice-President and General Manager of a multi-million dollar business. I started at the bottom in 1965, took the business over in 1983 and retired in 1995. I had 32 full-time employees. I?m a people person, problem solver, and able to do the most with whatever is available. I couldn?t have had the success that unfolded during my leadership without a lot of excellent, wonderful people, my wife being my support and best employee.
.If you had the chance to revoke one ordinance in El Paso immediately upon taking office, which one would it be? The establishment of a municipal drainage utility system. (Storm water)
.Describe a moment that changed your life. When I won custody of my three children. A father winning custody of his children in the early 70?s in the state of Texas was practically non-existent.
.In what ways is El Paso on the right track, and in what ways does it need to change course? The last two City Councils have set El Paso into a back-slide. It is extremely difficult to find anything positive either Council has done. The one good thing about being at rock bottom is you have to go up.
.If elected, how will you balance the needs of family, your career and your office? The same way I balanced them when I was working full-time: set priorities and make time management my daily creed.
.Where did you grow up? I was born April 20, 1941 in Tucumcari, NM. I attended St. Ann?s Parochial School thru 9th grade and graduated with honors. I went on to graduate from Tucumcari High School in 1959. My father was a railroad engineer and my mother was a homemaker. I started to work full-time in the auto parts business right after graduation. I married in 1962 and my son and daughter were born in 1963 and 1964 respectively.
.When and why did you come to El Paso? I moved to El Paso in 1965 because there were more opportunities here in El Paso than in Tucumcari where the population was approximately 10,000 in 1965.
.Do you have a website, twitter or facebook account? Website: www.georgegatkins.com
