Alcohol Banned During Summer, Music Under The Stars At Chamizal

The Chamizal National Memorial announces no alcoholic beverages during June, July and August, the same months that the popular Sunday night concert series Music Under the Stars takes place.

The National Park Service (NPS) is informing the public about the new policy – that will prohibit the use of alcohol without a permit at Chamizal National Memorial during the months of June, July and August- through bi-lingual signs, bi-lingual brochures, notification on the Chamizal NMem website, and on-site education by park staff.

The new policy is designed to increase safety at the Chamizal and bring the alcohol policy in line with that of local and state parks.

“We want to ensure a quality experience for all Park visitors and protect the family atmosphere that many have come to enjoy,” said Catherine Light, Superintendent, Chamizal National Memorial.

“This new policy will increase the safety of visitors, park staff and Chamizal law enforcement officers.” Park Rangers will advise visitors in possession of alcohol to remove all alcoholic beverages from the park or to secure them in a locked vehicle.

Park Rangers and other NPS staff will make those in violation of the policy aware of the new restrictions and request that they comply with the new rules. The prohibition against possession of alcohol will be effective beginning June 1, 2011. After June 1st, citations will be issued, alcohol confiscated, and entry into or use of the area denied for possession of alcohol.

The consumption or possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage of any kind is prohibited on the grounds of Chamizal National Memorial, unless an alcohol permit has been issued.

Alcohol permits may be issued upon request by the park manager for special events operating under a use agreement. An alcohol permit may be revoked for cause by the park manager, their designee or a Law Enforcement officer.

The maximum penalty for violation of the prohibition is $5,000 and/or not more than 6 months in prison.
