118-Day Dry Spell Broken: El Paso Records Trace Of Rain

After going 118 consecutive days without any precipitation, El Pasoans finally had their prayers answered in the form of rain.

Storms moved in from the southwest, arriving in the borderland during the afternoon. The National Weather Service issued several severe thunderstorm warnings for northwest El Paso and southeast Dona Ana counties, advising residents that strong storms bringing rain and gusts of up to 60 mph would move through the area.

Early in the evening, ABC-7 Chief Meteorologist “Doppler” Dave Speelman confirmed El Paso’s record drought had been broken, as the El Paso International Airport recorded its first trace of precipitation in 118 days.

Speelman said some of the storms that hit the area also carried marble or penny-sized hail. This, he said, is typical weather for this time of year.

“We should’ve seen these storms in May. We’re finally catching up a little bit,” Speelman said.
