Local School Throws Prom For Student With Leukemia
Horizon High School senior Angie Gomez spent her senior prom in the hospital suffering from leukemia.
Friday night, she got a second chance at her prom courtesy of the students from the Da Vinci School for Science and the Arts.
When the students at Da Vinci read her story in the paper, they organized a prom specifically for her, calling it “Angie’s prom.”
The 18-year-old has been battling leukemia since she was 2 years old.
She said she’s had to miss a lot in her life because of her cancer — but that prom wasn’t going to be one of the things she missed.
“It’s incredibly special,” said Gomez. “I’m just, you know, I’m blessed that there’s nothing more I can say. They’ve done so much. They did it from the kindness of their heart. It’s amazing.”
Da Vinci students saw Gomez’s loss as an opportunity to help.
“It kind of inspired our students in a way we’ve never been inspired before, and I saw not just the student council come together, but the whole school was united under Angie,” said Da Vinci student Eliana Grijalva.
Gomez also started a foundation that helps other children who are battling cancer.
