Large Fire Destroys Homes, Businesses In Far East El Paso
A massive blaze in east El Paso destroyed two businesses and two homes.
It happened just after 5 Saturday afternoon on the 13000 block of Maldero Drive. That’s right off Pellicano, east of loop 375. No injuries were reported.
El Paso County Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Cris Acosta said workers from a pallet company were trying to burn trash. That fire quickly got out of control and spread to another pellet company and several homes.
Fire crews had contained the fire but were still working on putting out hotspots on Saturday evening.
Horizon, Socorro, San Elizario and Montana Vista fire fighters all worked together to contain the blaze. Fort Bliss fire crews also assisted.
The lack of hydrants in the area made the task more challenging for fire crews. Dry and windy weather conditions also made it difficult to battle the fire.
Residents anxiously stood by to make sure their homes were not destroyed as fire fighters worked throughout the afternoon. Sheriff officials said residents should heed the warning against any type of burning due to extreme drought conditions.
County commissioners issued a 90-day burn ban in April. Violating it can cost up to $500.
