Police: 5-Year-Old Boy Takes Family Minivan, Crashes

A 5-year-old boy who wanted a late-night snack took off in his family’s minivan about 1:30 Friday morning, police said.

During his hunt for candy, the boy knocked down two street signs and then crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Copia Street and Aurora Avenue, police said.

Police at the scene told an ABC-7 photographer that the boy wanted a candy bar and decided to drive to a nearby convenience store.

He secretly took off in the minivan from his home on Nations Avenue in Central El Paso, and then drove about a mile south to the 1800 block of Copia Street.

Officers at the scene said he was not injured. A police officer drove the boy back home and alerted the family.
