KVIA Alumni Grace The Airwaves In ‘Big Time’ Markets

Did you catch Amber Sullins doing the weather on ?Good Morning America? this weekend or last? Up in the Windy City, you can see Rob Elgas hosting the NBC-owned TV station?s morning show. Have you traveled to Los Angeles and caught Robert Holguin reporting for KABC?

Seeing KVIA alumni excel at the ?big time? level makes us all proud.

Amber appeared nationwide (albeit on a fill-in basis) because she?s a great meteorologist with flawless presentation skills. She anchored ABC-7?s ?Good Morning El Paso? weathercasts for four years after graduating from college. She returned home to Phoenix, where she had a baby, and forecasts the weather weekday mornings for the ABC affiliate.

Amber tells me she was well taken care of in New York, ?from the car service that picked me up every morning to take me from the hotel to the ABC studios, to the hair and make-up team and the producers that put together the entire show including the weather segments. I didn?t have to do anything except show up and ?perform.??

Amber is too modest, but I can tell you she was applying her own makeup in El Paso!

I actually watched Amber on TV while visiting an earlier era ?Good Morning El Paso? anchor, Rob Elgas, who now works in Chicago. Elgas still has his movie-star looks and he is one of the most relaxed on-camera ?naturals? I?ve ever seen.

You can walk right up and look into his magnificent glass-front studio just off downtown Michigan Avenue. Rob has settled down and married a wonderful co-worker with whom he has two adorable children.

And then there?s another buddy of mine, Robert Holguin, who anchored ?Good Morning El Paso? after Elgas. Robert is an El Paso native with deep roots in our community. But when the L.A. ABC station came calling, Robert and his wife answered. Robert can be seen nightly reporting from practically every square inch of Los Angeles.

Several other KVIA-TV veterans are making their mark in big markets. Amber, Rob, and Robert stand out in my mind. I feel like our demanding workload and superb news management team helped get them there.

I?m just thankful that Estela Casas and some other major-market talents at ABC-7 have decided to make El Paso their home.
