Overnight Rains Flood Neighborhood Damaged By Levee Breach

Tuesday night’s heavy downpour dumped rain on a neighborhood that was still recovering from a levee breach nearly two months ago.

Wednesday morning, many residents of Ramos Court in the Lower Valley found about two inches of water standing in their homes. Family members scrambled to sweep the muddy water out of their homes. Yards and the street outside were covered with mud and water.

Ramos Court is the same neighborhood that was devastated by a levee breach in June. The breach sent water and mud streaming into the nearly two dozen homes on the street, destroying flooring, appliances and belongings. Some residents were staying in temporary shelter until their homes were inhabitable.

“Here we are again. We are reliving what June 4 brought to us — more flooding,” said Ron Navejas, who lives on the street. “These people just moved into their homes yesterday and we just settled them in this Saturday with donated goods, refrigerators, ranges and they’re flooded again.”

Crew members with the stormwater utility were passing out sand bags and pumping water out of the neighborhood. Pallets of sand bags were standing by many of the homes Wednesday morning.

Red Cross volunteers assisted residents, taking them to temporary shelters once again so they can assess the damage from this most recent flooding.
