Special-Needs El Dorado Student Dies After Complications

A special needs student at El Dorado High School died after losing consciousness during class Monday morning, said officials with the Socorro Independent School District.

Daniel Escobar, a district spokesman, said 15-year-old Luis Anguiano was resting when his teacher realized he wasn’t breathing about 10:45 a.m. Thursday. The special education staff immediately called 911, performed CPR and even used a defibrillator.

Principal Nora Paugh said Anguiano was one of eight students deemed “medically fragile,” who were in a self-contained classroom on campus located on the 12000 block of Edgemere Boulevard.

Anguiano was taken to Sierra Providence Medical Center, where he died in the emergency room, officials said.

“Most of the kids weren’t aware of what happened,” Paugh said. “Counselors immediately came to talk to staff members because — as devastated as they were — they still had the other kids that they need to take care of.”

Officials said Anguiano went into cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.

“You know, (for) these kids, it’s more than just coming to school everyday,” Paugh said. “We’re family with them, we love them. … This is the worst possible end.”
