Northwest El Paso Attracts Businesses, Families

Census numbers show a population boom in Northwest El Paso and projected figures don’t indicate the trend will slow down.

“Had you come out here a couple of years earlier, you probably would have wondered why they were even building out here,” said Sam Trimble, a local realtor who said people often underestimate the Northwest.

“Now, the Northwest part of town is probably 15-20 percent of my business,” said Trimble.

The City of El Paso considers 5 zip codes to be the Northwest, including 79821 (Anthony), 79835 (Canutillo), 79911, 79912 and 79932.

Trimble said people look to the Northwest because some homes are more affordable and the area is away from the “hustle and bustle” of other neighborhoods. He said businesses have started “popping up like crazy” in response to the population growth.

One of those businesses is Mattress Firm’s newest location in the Northwest. “We saw this piece of land and it was perfect for what we wanted to do,” said Mattress Firm’s Dan Longoria. “We’re excited about what’s yet to come.”

The Northwest has already come a long way, though. According to census calculations from the City of El Paso, the area has seen a 460% growth in population since 1990. More than 13,000 new people have moved to the Northwest in the past 11 years alone.

The City’s projections for the year 2015 indicate the Northwest will grow another 15 percent. “The growth hasn’t quite hit its peak yet,” said Trimble.
