AP: Weekend Gunfire Disrupted Bowie Football Practice

Bowie High School is concerned about campus safety after a shooting on the Mexican side interrupted football practice and forced the players inside.

The shooting last weekend in violence-plagued Juarez, left a police commander dead.

Bowie High School players preparing for practice on a field a few hundred yards from the shooting said bullets were fizzing through the air and hitting stadium lights.

School wasn’t in session, but a lockdown was ordered with dozens of athletes on campus.

Mexican authorities say more than 400 bullets were fired on the officer’s car. The past three years, more than 6,000 people have died in mostly drug-fueled violence in Juarez.
