Local Home-School Students Take To The Sky

Local mom Timber Dawson decided to take advantage of her husband’s pilot’s license and put together an unforgettable field trip for El Paso’s home-school community on Saturday.

“Well, sometimes when I say ‘lower’ and he goes faster and really low, it makes us float up into the air,” said Jenacy Dawson.

Jenacy and her siblings are home-schooled. When their mom, Timber Dawson, wanted to put together a field trip to the Santa Teresa Airport for other home-schooled children, she figured flying was the way to go. She contacted all of the members of the Liberty Home-School Network on Facebook.

“(The field trip idea) just kinda came to mind and I put it out there like, ‘Is anybody interested?’ and we had like 60 hits in three days,” Dawson said, “So I (thought) there’s interest.”

Dawson’s husband Nathan is a pilot. So when they got positive feedback online, they rented a couple of planes and took to the sky. Timber said she thought it would be a fun and educational way to unite the El Paso home-school community.

“This just expands their education,” said Timber. “I mean, in the books we learn about aviation, flying, and (now) they get to see it from the air.”

About 50 kids and parents showed up for the event. Due to the huge turnout, the Dawson family is already working on planning a second high-flying field trip.
