UPDATE: Baby Found Unresponsive Choked On Penny, Officials Say
A 1-year-old boy who was found unresponsive and later died likely choked on a penny, authorities said Monday.
According to preliminary autopsy reports, the boy, whose mother found him unconscious Sept. 28 inside a west Las Cruces home, had a penny lodged inside his throat. The boy was sleeping on a couch.
The mother said she immediately called for help, but attempts to revive the baby were unsuccessful.
Dona Ana County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kelly Jameson said the the family is from Oregon and was staying with friends near the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds, where the boy’s father was working for a fair vendor.
The death appears to have been accidental, and no charges have been filed, Jameson said.
