NMSU Womens Golf Begins Play in Home Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Long Beach State leads the 16-team field of the Price’s “Give Em Five” Intercollegiate that began Monday, Oct. 10, at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.

Long Beach State is in first after the first round with a 287 score. The 49ers are the only team in the field to score under par (-1), while the Baylor Bears sit in second with an even par score of 288.

NM State finished the day tied for seventh with the University of Cincinnati after posting a score of 299 (+11).

“There is a lot of great competition in this tournament,” head coach Paul Brilliant said. “Of course we would like to be in one of the top-three spots after day one, but there is a lot of golf to be played and we are still in a good spot to make a move.”

Senior Ashley Elias leads the Aggies after round one with a score of 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 16th. Right behind Elias are sophomore Demi Mak, who shot a two-over-par 74, and junior Lindsay Reeve, who finished the round with a 3-over-par 75.

NM State has a total of 10 golfers competing in the tournament, with Laura Barron, Marisa Bautista, Estefania Buritica, Amelie Buhl and Cheryl Lo playing as individuals.

Sophomore Mieke Canan and freshman Laura Barron scored a 5-over-par 77, sophomore Estefania Buritica tallied a 6-over-par 78, junior Marisa Batista and sophomore Amelie Buhl each marked a 9-over-par 81, junior Aileen Meredith scored an 11-over-par 8 and senior Cheryl Lo finished with a 15-over-par 87.

Individually, the field is led by Baylor senior Chelsey Cothran and Idaho senior Teo Poplawski, both of whom shot a round of 69 (-3).

Long Beach State is the only team to have three golfers card a score of even par or better, including senior Noelle Zavaleta (-2), sophomore Rochelle Chan (E), and senior Monica Villareal (E).

The three-day tournament continues Tuesday starting with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT) and continues through Wednesday at the NMSU golf course.
