A driver was hospitalized after a crash in which the car’s front end and motor became separated and came to rest on the opposite side of the boulevard.

The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to look into a serious single-vehicle collision about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Hawkins Boulevard.

Investigators said 21-year-old Adrian Montes was driving a 2005 Saturn south on Hawkins when he lost control and slammed into a palm tree, causing the the front end of the Saturn to become separated from the body of the vehicle. The front end and engine came to rest on the northbound lanes of Hawkins.

The rest of the car continued into the front yard of a home on Gazelle Drive.

Montes, of the 300 block of Delaware Street, was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Montes was wearing his seat belt.
