Woman Struck By Car In Fabens Dies In Hospital

A woman who was hospitalized after being struck by a car in Fabens died hours later at a hospital, authorities said.

El Paso County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched about 6 p.m. Tuesday to the 600 block of G Street in Fabens, where a Hispanic woman was reportedly struck by a car while crossing the street.

When deputies arrived, they found the woman lying on the ground, at which point an ambulance and the Fabens Volunteer Fire Department were called to the scene. The driver of the gray 2004 Hyundai Sonata involved in the accident was also at the scene.

Investigators said the driver, 24-year-old Ramon Mendiaz, of Fabens, was approaching the intersection of Second and G streets, when 69-year-old Maria Favela, crossed the street into Mendiaz’s path.

Witnesses told investigators that Mendiaz was not speeding. He said he did not see the Favela crossing the street.

Favela suffered a broken leg and lacerations to her face. She was taken to a local area hospital, where authorities said she died about 8:45 later that evening.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Traffic Unit investigators continue to investigate. A sheriff’s spokeswoman said it is unknown if the woman died as a result from the injuries sustained at the accident.

Mendiaz was cited for not having a license and failure to maintain financial responsibility. He has not been criminally charged, however, he was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Jail Annex for outstanding traffic warrants, authorities said.
