Statistics Show 67% Of Traffic Deaths Are Alcohol-Related
The El Paso Police Department has investigated 58 traffic-related fatal collisions that have resulted in 66 deaths through Nov. 17.
The Department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit investigates traffic-related fatalities that occur within the city limits of El Paso. The contributing factors that have been determined in the 58 fatal collisions are as follows:
Alcohol has been a contributing factor in 39 of the 58 traffic related fatal collisions in 2011.
Speed has been a contributing factor in 32 of the 58 traffic related fatal collisions in 2011.
Failure to wear a seat belt has been a contributing factor in 11 of the 66 traffic fatalities in 2011.
Ejection from a motor vehicle has been a contributing factor in eight of the 66 traffic fatalities in 2011.
Pedestrians account for 16 of the 66 traffic-related fatalities in 2011.
The city of El Paso has seen 66 traffic-related fatalities in 2011, compared with 59 at the same time in 2010.
Of the 58 fatal collisions in 2011, eight have been double fatalities. The individuals who have died in the collisions: 36 have been the drivers of the vehicles; 14 have been passengers; and 16 have been pedestrians. There have been three recorded motorcycle fatalities for 2011, but no recorded pedi-cyclist (bicycle) deaths.
