Police: No Drunk Driving Fatalities Over Holiday Weekend

The El Paso Police Department reported no traffic or DWI fatalities over the New Year’s holiday.

Officials with the El Paso Police Department said 16 people were charged with DWI from the 28 hour period from midnight Saturday until 4 a.m. Sunday.

During the period before the ‘No Refusal Mandatory Blood Draw Operation,’ which began at 10 p.m. Saturday night, 12 people were charged with DWI. Of the 12, seven were charged with a first time offense, two were charged with a second offense, and 1 person was charged with a third offense. Two additional individuals were charged with a blood alcohol level of higher than .15.

During the No Refusal Mandatory Blood Draw Operation, from Saturday at 10 p.m. through Sunday 4 a.m., officers reported detaining five people during that time.

Of those five, police said two people were charged with DWI with a blood alcohol level higher than .15. Another was charged with DWI and one other person had blood drawn and a warrant issued.

One person who was detained, passed the Breathalyzer test and was released.

On New Year’s Day, police said during the period from Monday at 12:50 a.m. through Tuesday at 2:20 a.m., police charged eight people with DWI.

Police said four of those were charged with DWI. Two people were charged with DWI with a blood alcohol level of higher than .15. Two of the eight received their second DWI.
