January is ‘Learn A Winter Sport Month’ in New Mexico
Gov. Susana Martinez says she may venture out to one of New Mexico ski resorts because of good snow conditions.
Martinez signed a proclamation Tuesday declaring January “Learn a Winter Sport Month” in the state. The governor said she used to enjoy skiing as a youngster and may consider taking up the sport again.
The governor described New Mexico as a “playground for anyone who enjoys the outdoors,” providing opportunities for skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoeing.
Tourism Secretary Monique Jacobson said the ski industry employs about 2,500 people and generates nearly a half billion dollars a year for New Mexico’s economy.
There are two premier skiing areas close to El Paso.
The Sacramento mountains offer the country’s southernmost skiing area. There, visitors can find Ski Apache in Mescalero, N.M., which is 120 miles from El Paso. Ski Cloudcroft, slightly closer to El Paso, is smaller than the facilities owned by the Mescalero Apache indians near Ruidoso.
