Trash Truck Bursts Into Flames In West El Paso

A garbage truck burst into flames in west El Paso Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Brentwood Avenue and Darwood Drive.

ABC-7 crews got to the scene shortly before fire crews arrived arrived. Residents were fleeing the surrounding homes as flames engulfed the truck.

Officials from the El Paso Fire Department said eight fire trucks and 24 firefighters were sent to extinguish the blaze, and crews were able to put the fire out in about five minutes. No other structures were damaged.

EPFD said the 51-year-old driver suffered burns to his arms and was taken to Las Palmas Medical Center.

Officials do no know what caused the fire, but the driver told firefighters he heard a pop in the engine and by the time he could pull the garbage truck over, the engine was engulfed in flames.
