Pedestrian Killed Crossing Mesa Street Is El Paso’s First Fatality Of 2012

A 65-year-old woman is the first traffic-related fatality in El Paso of 2012, according to police.

Police said Maria Contreras-Dequirogawas crossing the street in the crosswalk just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday when she was struck by a Nissan X-terra driven by Mary Seagrove making a left turn from Glory Road onto Mesa Street.

Special Traffic Investigators determined that speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

This is the first traffic-related death for 2012, compared to five at this time in 2011. This is also the first pedestrian-related fatality of this year, compared to two at the same time last year.
