Item on Monday’s City Council agenda asks for May election to decide City Hall’s fate

An item has been placed on Monday’s City Council agenda that would delay the demolition of City Hall until a vote by El Pasoans in the May 2013 election.

The agenda item asks that City Council’s action on Sept. 18, 2012 be repealed and that “the City Council of the City of El Paso, Texas, its Mayor, John Cook, and any person or corporation or business entity of any type be forbidden from preparing for the demolition of City Hall.”

The agenda item also states that no demolition would take place until “the citizens of El Paso, Texas, authorize such demolition by voting for it at the next City Election in May, 2013.”

City Council also will discuss in Executive Session and take action in related to the demolition of City Hall, the construction of the new ballpark stadium, the initiative petitions and related litigation.

The City Council meeting will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11 at City Hall.
