Home flooded by country club golf course

It was early Monday morning when the sound of water flowing into a west El Paso home woke up Jesus Aguilera. While his wife’s shoes and a bedroom closet were damaged, it was the view outside that shocked him. Gallons of water were pouring into his backyard from the Coronado Country Club golf course, with no sign of stopping.

It was around 2:00 a.m. when fire crews arrived at the home on Bandolero Drive, and found what they described as a “river” flowing from a broken water line at the gold course. According to emergency radio scanners, that line was not shut off until 3:00 a.m. And by that time, Aguilera’s backyard had been turned into a lake, estimated by fire officials to be more than 6 inches deep.

Fire crews worked to create a drainage trench to lead the water out of the backyard and into the street. Meanwhile, Aguilera, his family, and emergency crews worked inside to remove the water from the house.

Despite the rude awakening, Aguilera managed to have a sense of humor. Regarding his wife, he told us this: “She always wanted a swimming pool. I told her, ‘hey put on a bikini and go out there and enjoy your swimming pool.'”
