Officer assaulted in Central El Paso

An El Paso police officer was assaulted Tuesday afternoon in Central El Paso. The attack unleashed a manhunt for several suspects in the area.

Police say the officer was attacked by at least three males. He suffered serious injuries, by said they aren’t life threatening.

Witnesses say the men looked Hispanic in their late teens.

The assault was reported shortly after 5 p.m. in the 4100 block of Trowbridge.

The officer has not been identified, but we do know he’s been with the department for five years.

Patrol cars swarmed the area as residents wondered what had happened.

The officer, according to police spokesman Chris Mears, was taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is not known if the assault involved a weapon or why the officer was in the area. Police say he was not undercover and they have no reason to believe it was gang-related.

A Department of Public Safety helicopter was also called in to assist in the search.

Detectives went door-to-door along Trowbridge and Cumberland streets, asking for information on the suspects.
