Update: Police identify man killed in Sunday morning traffic collision

Oct. 29, 2012 update: El Paso Police have identified the person killed in a Sunday morning collision as 19-year-old Mauro Galarza of the 5700 block of Venice in El Paso. The injured person in the wreck has been identified as 19-year-old Julian Jimenez of the 1300 block of Wyoming in El Paso.

Oct. 28, 2012 story: El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigators are looking into a fatal collision that happened Sunday morning in the Northeast.

According to El Paso police, a 19-year-old male driving a Chevy Cobalt was driving north on Railroad around 6:30 a.m.

The driver attempted to make a left turn onto Diana Drive, but was driving too quickly and slid towards the center divider on Railroad Drive, police said.

Police said the vehicle’s rear struck a traffic barrel, and began to spin.

The vehicle then collided with an F150 that was stopped on Railroad Drive, facing south, police said.

According to police, the driver and a 19-year-old passenger were transported to a local hospital where the driver was pronounced dead.

The passenger has serious injuries, but the driver of the F150 was unharmed.

Investigators said speed was a factor in the collision.
