EPISD considering changing elementary school attendance zones in South El Paso

The El Paso Independent School District is considering changing elementary school attendance zones — mostly in South El Paso — to more effectively use their campuses and prevent overcrowding.

District officials will hold community input meetings in the next several weeks and present the plan to trustees for final approval in March. If trustees approve the changes at that time, then they’ll take effect for the 2013-14 school year.

Some children who currently attend Douglass Elementary School and who live east of about Saint Vrain street may have to go to Aoy Elementary School. Some Hart students may also move to Aoy.

Children who currently attend Beall Elementary and live west of about Estrella Street may have to attend Zavala Elementary School. The draft plans for the proposed changes are still preliminary and the district is seeking community input before it presents the plan to school board trustees.

The district has to study transportation changes. The proposed changes have been brought on by campus enrollment, the rebuilding of Hart Elementary and housing increases on Fort Bliss that will require rezoning in the Hughey and Hawkins schools areas, according to district officials.
