Escaped detainee back in custody following search

Officials have caught a man who they believe escaped custody while at University Medical Center Saturday morning.

According to a spokesperson from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Officer, 30-year-old Omar Moran was on the run after being placed into custody on charges of robbery, failure to identify, and parole violation.

He was sent to UMC for a medical checkup when he escaped, officials said. He is considered dangerous, and the public was urged not to approach him.

ABC-7’s Matthew Smith was in the area of the search in South Central El Paso around 9:30 a.m.

He counted more than 15 law enforcement vehicles, including cars belonging to sheriff’s deputies, police officers and border patrol officials, just before 10 a.m.

However, Smith reported the search extended to the Haskell Street Wastewater Treatment Plant on Delta Street. There, Smith observed more than 25 law enforcement vehicles, plus two helicopters.

According to Smith, the active search scene included dogs sniffing the area.

By 10:30 a.m., officials determined Moran may have been in the plant, potentially hiding in a tank.

The search continued around 11 a.m., but Moran was caught and placed back in custody before 11:30 a.m.
