Las Cruces reaches population milestone: 100,000+
The City of the Crosses is now part of the six-digit club.
Sometime between July 2012 and April 1, the population of Las Cruces surpassed the 100,000 mark.
“This is tremendously important news for us as a community,” said Mayor Ken Miyagishima in a statement. “It signals a continued healthy economy, and proves Las Cruces remains a desirable place to live, work, play and retire.”
According to statistics maintained by city officials the population of Las Cruces is 100,984. They calculate the number by tracking residential building permits.
“Our figures indicate the existence of 45,395 total housing units within the city limits. Based on an occupancy rate of 97.8 percent that puts us at 44,409 occupied housing units. We estimate approximately 2.27 occupants per household in the city,” said Tom Murphy, Metropolitan Planning Organization officer.
Mayor Miyagishima hopes reaching the milestone will bring new opportunities for Las Cruces.
“Hopefully, surpassing the 100,000 mark will make us even more attractive to businesses and industries interested in locating in cities with larger populations,” he said.
Las Cruces is New Mexico’s second largest city, behind Albuquerque.
