Diablos lose by 1 run in final game ever in El Paso
Sunday night’s game didn’t just mark the end of the Diablos 2013 home schedule.
It also was the last time the team would play at 23-year-old Cohen Stadium and in El Paso.
More than 7,000 fans attended the final home game with many using cameras and their phones to snap pictures to preserve the memories.
The Diablos dug themselves an early hole, going down early to Sioux City 8-2 but made a comeback before losing couldn’t 8-7.
The Diablos still have seven road games to finish out the season.
Diablos General Manager Matt LaBranche told ABC-7 last week that the Diablos would not play in 2014 and were expected to relocate to another city in 2015, possibly in the Midwest.
The Diablos have been an independent minor league baseball team since 2005, first playing in the Central Baseball League, and then in the American Association independent league.
The team was a Double-A affiliate of various Major League Baseball teams from 1972 to 2004.
El Paso will be getting a Triple-A baseball team when the Tucson Padres relocate to the Sun City in time for the 2014 season in a brand new ballpark in Downtown.
