Dona Ana County Commissioners taking public input on same-sex resolution

Dozens of Dona Ana County residents packed Commissioners Court Tuesday morning because of the county’s recent decision to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Dona Ana County Commissioners were originally going to vote on a resolution supporting same-sex marriage but that item was taken off the agenda. The public was still allowed to speak on the the topic.

The issue is still brewing after last week’s move by County Clerk Lynn Ellins to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. He said it would be unconstitutional not to do so.

However, newly appointed County Commissioner Ben Rawson said it wasn’t up to Ellins to make that decision. He said it’s voters who should decide.
