EPISD officials to determine new home of Insights Museum

The new home of the Insights Museum could be determined Tuesday by the El Paso Independent School District Board of Managers.

Board of Managersis expected to vote if the vacant Alamo Elementary School in south El Paso will become the museum’s new location.

The elementary school was closed temporarily in 2005 while the Housing Authority built new apartments in the area.

In 2007, voters approved millions of dollars to reconstruct the school.

The EPISD School Board opted not to move forward with the plans because the city placed a historic overlay on the school and it would increase costs to renovate.

The Insights Museum has been without a location since the downtown building was torn down in March to make room for the Triple-A baseball stadium.

Before the building went down, the museum’s board of directors made a commitment to continue educating children.

“There is a void that needs to be filled. It’s critical we engage our youth in fun science and math programs, integrate art to stir imagination and do so at Insights. Our goal is a community learning science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) in exciting ways that connect to the rest of the world and inspire our own kids to become future leaders solving real world problems,” said Nate Robinson, Insights El Paso Science Center President.

Museum officials said several community leaders are expected to attend the EPISD Board of Managers meeting in support of the museum Tuesday at 5pm.

If the location at Alamo Elementary School is approved, the Insights Museum could reopen as soon as Spring 2014.
