Stores offer major discounts; El Pasoans shop after-Christmas sales

It was the day after Christmas and many shoppers were buying instead of returning or exchanging at Bassett Place Mall.

“A black T-shirt, some stuff from Bath and Body and found some good deals,” Ray Holguin said Thursday afternoon.

“Jewelry, presents, some stuff for next year, decorations,” Alexis Marruffo described about the items in her many bags as she headed to her car.

Some just went to the mall to browse but didn’t leave empty handed.

“Just checking out whatever the specials. Normally after the season they have 50 percent off,” Wanida Marruffo said.

Retailers offer deep discounts after Christmas to clear fall and winter stock.

Kohls offered a 15-20 percent off coupon depending on how much people spent. Target has reduced the prices of Christmas items to 50 percent off. Bath & Body Works’ semi-annual sale offered up to 75 percent off everything in store. JCPenney offered 60-70 percent off winter clothes.

It’s also the final push for stores to rake in the fourth quarter or end-of-the-year profits.

“It’s a bit of an overload but you can make it fun,” Alexis said about the shopping season that’s been happening since Thanksgiving.

If you don’t like paying full price, waiting for after-Christmas sales may be a good idea.
