Chihuahuas Fall in Day Game 13-7
The Las Vegas 51s won their fifth game in six tries at Southwest University Park, beating the El Paso Chihuahuas 13-7 Wednesday afternoon. Las Vegas center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs and Allan Dykstra went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the 51s.
Trailing 13-4, the first five Chihuahuas reached base in the bottom of the seventh inning. El Paso scored three runs and had the bases loaded with one out, but Ryan Reid struck out Rocky Gale and got Jonathan Galvez to pop out to shortstop, ending the rally and keeping Las Vegas comfortably ahead. Gale went 4-for-5 in the loss and is now seven for his last nine dating back to Monday’s win in Tacoma. Jace Peterson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and had an eighth-inning at bat while a home run shy of a cycle, but struck out.
Both Jeff Francoeur and Cody Decker pitched shutout innings for the Chihuahuas, who have now used position players as pitchers eight times this season.
