Shot glasses given to students for local high school prom

A spokeswoman with the Ysleta Independent School District says shot glasses were not an acceptable gift given to hundreds of students who attended Eastwood High School’s senior prom on Saturday.

“We’ve met with the sponsors of prom, we’ve also learned from this and we want to make sure that there is a protocol for all proms,” said YISD spokeswoman Patricia Ayala. “To make sure this never happens again.”

The school’s prom committee selected the “dessert glasses,” as they are labeled in a prom-supply catalogue. The committee ordered 500 of the glasses for the candy table at the dance. The glasses were filled with Skittles and M&Ms, Ayala said.

The total cost for the glasses, engraved “Eastwood High School Prom 2014,” was more than $1800. Not all of the students took home a glass and Ayala says there are more than 100 left.

The area superintendent told ABC-7 the remaining glasses are heading straight to the glass recycling section of the landfill.

The district will be meeting with its high school principals on Friday and will discuss a protocol for future prom purchases.
