Stiverne Set to Compete at World Junior Championships

UTEP track and field sprinter Aiyanna Stiverne will represent the United States in the women’s 4x400m relay at the 2014 World Junior Championships on Saturday.

Taking to the track at 4:05 p.m. (MT) at the notorious Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Stiverne will be a part of one of 13 relay teams going for gold at the 15th-Annual World Junior Championships.

As one of the IAAF’s most prestigious events, the meet features the world’s best athletes under the age of 20. The six-day event will showcase a total of total of 1,540 athletes from 167 countries. For the first time the event will be held in the United States.

The sprinter earned the opportunity to represent the United States on the world stage after registering a personal-best 54.10 in the 400m dash at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene on July 6th.

In her first season with the Orange and Blue, Stiverne helped the UTEP women’s 4x400m relay squad to both indoor and outdoor Conference USA titles. The freshman also aided the Miners’ 4×100 relay team to a bid to the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, for the first since 2008.
