Behind the scenes of El Paso Humane Society’s telethon

Humane society volunteers and KVIA staff work tirelessly to put the all-day El Paso Humane Society fundraiser together.

“We start planning the telethon almost the day after the telethon is over,” said humane society executive director, Betty Hoover.

Those watching ABC-7 can catch the annual telethon.

But watching on TV can’t give you a sense of the massive undertaking it takes to run the fundraiser.

“The real hard pressure starts coming in January,” said Hoover.

Hoover said rounding up sponsors for the show isn’t an easy task.

There are also volunteers that need to be rounded up.

“In total, between the shelter and here at the studio there are about 300 people,” said Hoover.

“It is (our ) largest fundraiser of the year and by far,” added Hoover.

Volunteers like Esther Herrera have been doing it for years.

“I have been volunteering with The humane society for about 15 years,” said Herrera.

Herrera told ABC-7 she’s an animal lover at heart and there’s nothing more rewarding than helping animals in need.

“My reward is getting all the animals adopted in there,” said Herrera.

The KVIA crew is working constantly throughout the day.

There are extra camera operators, audio operators, directors and talent all going the extra mile and it’s all for one goal.
“Every dollar that is raised goes the health and well-being of the animals,” said Hoover.
