Canutillo woman arrested for allegedly leaving 4-year-old home alone for 2 hours

A Canutillo woman has been arrested for allegedly abandoning or endangering child with intent to return.

At about 9 p.m. on April 28, 2014, an El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy was sent to 7019 First St. in Canutillo in reference to alleged child endangerment.

The deputy met with an employee of Child Protective Services (CPS) at the home who told the deputy she was conducting a welfare check on a woman claiming to live there.

The CPS worker called the sheriff’s office after she was met at the front door by a 4-year old girl who was home alone.

During the investigation of the home, the 4-year old’s mother arrived and it was determined that the child was left unattended for about two hours, according to sheriff’s officials.

The mother, identified as 28-year-old Evelin Herrera, was then arrested.

The child was turned over to her grandparents who lived nearby. Herrera was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond set at $5,000.
