City of El Paso hosts first public budget workshop
There are still four more chances to hear how the El Paso city budget is shaping up for next fiscal year. There were few members of the public at city hall Monday during the first of five meetings.
City Manager Tommy Gonzalez is only on his fourth week on the job, but department heads commended his work on the budget.
The first budget workshop consisted of presentations from Gonzalez, Chief Budget Officer Lynly Leeper and other department heads. City Rep Cortney Niland would like to see additional flights to and from El Paso International, and they’re considering raising the short term parking rate. So far, these are the changes included in the proposed budget: A tax increase of 2.1 cents will go towards paying for the Quality of Life Bond approved by voters, and for incentives for businesses helping to grow the city. There will be an increase in Parks and Recreation fees, except for seniors. The El Paso Zoo will also see an increase in admission if the budget is approved, from $10 to $12 per adult admission. Negotiations are continuing with Police and Fire Associations Academies. Overall, the average household will have to pay $33 more for the year.
