Canvas services fully restored, NMSU students, faculty given grace period

UPDATE: The New Mexico State University administration reports that Canvas service is fully restored as of 8 a.m. May 8.

The students and faculty who were impacted by the security alert will get a grace period for any activities that were due on either May 7 or May 8. They now must be submitted by Monday, May 11 at 11:59 p.m.

The owner of Canvas, Instructure, advised NMSU that "that after reviewing the situation with an independent security firm, there is no sign that anyone kept access to the system, accessed NMSU user accounts, or took any additional data."

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) -- Thursday, New Mexico State University said a security breach is affecting Canvas, a website students and staff use to access course materials.

According to an NMSU spokesperson, the breach is a "widespread issue."

NMSU Information Security sent an alert that warned students and staff not to log in, click on or download anything through Canvas. It said everyone should log out of Canvas until an all-clear is sent out.

The campus' IT team is working with Canvas, NMSU IT said.
