Couple arrested in Las Cruces for allegedly stealing ballpark canopy
Las Cruces Police arrested a couple for allegedly cutting down and stealing a large canopy that covered bleachers at a city park.
Orrin J. Hechler, 36, of Las Cruces, and 31-year-old Karisa Arroyos, who has addresses in Las Cruces and T. or C., N.M., were arrested early Friday morning near the baseball fields on Hadley Avenue.
Hechler and Arroyos were charged with one count each of criminal damage to property and larceny.
Police say that shortly after 3 a.m. Sept. 12, two Las Cruces Police officers were on routine patrol near Unidad Park when they spotted a black pickup truck park near the Ron Galla T-Ball Field.
Police say the officers spotted Hechler and Arroyos inside the park, allegedly cutting down a canopy that covered a section of bleachers.
The officers watched as Hechler and Arroyos rolled up the tarp and tossed it over the fence toward the pickup, according to police.
The canopy, which measures 49-feet by 12-feet, is valued at $2,160.
Hechler and Arroyos were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000 each.
