Texas’ tax-free holiday is this weekend

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Shoppers can save money on clothes and school supplies in Texas during the state's sales tax holiday on Aug. 7-9.

State law exempts sales tax on some items priced below $100. The exemption applies whether shoppers buy things in person or online.

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts said shoppers can save about $8 on every $100 they spend.

Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Don Huffines estimated shoppers will save $142.5 million in state and local sales tax during this year’s sales tax holiday.

Layaway or final payments made on existing layaway purchases during the holiday are tax free, as long as the individual item price is below $100, Huffines said.

If a retailer charges sales tax on a qualifying item, customers can request a refund from the seller.
