RED RIVER, N.M. (KVIA) -- A bear bit a man Friday near Red River, New Mexico, the state's Department of Wildlife said.

Officials said the man's injuries aren't life-threatening. The bite happened while the man was camping.

Red River is about a two-hour drive north of Santa Fe.

Department of Wildlife conservation officers are investigating the bite and securing the area.

The department reported another bear bite last Wednesday in Cedar Crest, which is near Albuquerque.

In light of the encounter, the department warned the public to "bear aware" while exploring wildlife habitats. While encounters can happen unexpectedly, the department said knowing how to react is critical.

The department urged those to take the following action when encountering a bear:

  • Remain calm and leave the area. Do not panic or make sudden movements.
  • Back away slowly. Stop and back away while keeping your eyes on the bear. Do not run, as running can trigger a bear's natural instinct to chase and attack.
  • Make yourself look large. Raise your arms, open your jacket, and stand tall to appear as intimidating as possible.
  • Do not approach. Never attempt to get closer to a bear for any reason. If you see cubs nearby, exercise extreme caution and ensure you do not get between them and their mother, who will act aggressively to defend them.
  • Fight back if attacked. If the bear becomes aggressive or charges, do not play dead. Arm yourself with a large stick and use any weapon available. Throw rocks, use a backpack, a hat, a jacket, or your bare hands if necessary to fight off the animal.
