Rep. Trejo recall petition organizers file suit against the City of El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – Monday, recall petition organizers have filed suit against the City of El Paso after being told they don't have enough signatures against District 4 City Rep. Cynthia Boyar Trejo, said petition organizer Joshua Dagda.

Last week, the city clerk determined the organizers had submitted 897 valid signatures out of the 4,233 they needed. The total was based on voter turnout in the 2024 general election, according to Dagda.

Dagda said the petition only needs 786 signatures based on the Dec. 14, 2024, runoff election in which Rep. Trejo was elected.

Volunteers gathered signatures since June 17 and submitted more than 1,000. They're looking to recall Rep. Trejo over her decision to vote against canceling the 380 agreement the city has with Meta for the Northeast data center.

Dagda said the lawsuit is now in District Court and is awaiting a response from the City of El Paso.

In a statement from Trejo in response to the petition, she said:

"My commitment has not changed. I will continue listening, showing up, and working every day to protect our community, earn the trust of the people I serve, and always put District 4 and El Paso first."
