10-day-old baby’s death under investigation in Dona Ana County
Doa Ana County Sheriff’s investigators are investigating the death of a 10-day-old baby boy who was found unresponsive inside an East Mesa home Monday morning.
The infant was reportedly not breathing when his 31-year-old mother woke up around 8:30 a.m. Monday.
The baby and his mother were temporarily living with friends at a home in the 6600 block of MacArthur Road and the two were sharing a twin bed.
Investigators say a friend of the mother, who also lived at the home, checked on the baby at 3:30 that morning, fed him, and put him back in bed with his mother.
Sheriff’s officials say the baby’s mother had allegedly been drinking the night before.
First responders arrived and immediately began CPR, but the baby was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a Las Cruces-area hospital.
Initial information gathered Monday indicates the baby had tested positive for methamphetamines when he was born.
